Curtin University, Perth, WA, Australia
About this program
This 1.5 year Masters course is designed for people seeking specialist journalism skills and knowledge to complement a Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma from a different area. There is a strong emphasis on practical newsgathering skills, and students will learn how to produce multimedia journalism using industry-standard facilities and technology. Students will start creating news for online, radio and video in their first semester, and will be introduced to journalism’s crucial role in democracy. Students will experience work integrated learning as reporters for the Curtin journalism news website, Western Independent. They will have the opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest, such as sports or political reporting. They will also learn how to promote themselves and their journalism through a dedicated Entrepreneurial Journalism unit. Later in the course, students will be taught advanced research and interviewing skills that will allow them to produce engaging long form journalism. Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.
