Juris Doctor

James Cook University, Townsville/Cairns, QLD, Australia

About this program

The Juris Doctor at James Cook University (JCU) is a graduate-entry law degree for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field. It takes three years full-time, with an accelerated option to finish in two years through a heavier study load. It is offered at the Townsville and Cairns campuses and through JCU Online.
The degree covers the Priestley 11 areas of law that Australian admitting authorities require, and it is accredited by Queensland's Legal Profession Admissions Board. Graduates still need practical legal training before they can be admitted as lawyers. Alongside Australian law, students develop legal writing, oral advocacy, and ethics and professional responsibility. Teaching draws on practising legal professionals. Students with relevant prior study may receive up to 24 credit points of credit for studies completed in the previous 10 years.

On both MLTSSL and CSOL, but a positive skills assessment is not the same as being able to practise. You must first be admitted to an Australian state legal profession, which for an overseas or JD graduate means passing the assessed academic subjects, completing Practical Legal Training, and being admitted by the state Supreme Court, before the occupation is realistically usable for a visa.
